STRESS
In the 21st century, there is no such term of a “stress-free’’ life in Singapore. In our country, competition are faced everywhere such as in schools, at work, even for powers. Therefore, presence of stress is definitely there. To me, there is no doubt that stress has its advantages and disadvantages. Having stress maybe good at times, but bad stress is strongly not encouraged.
One of its advantages is that with stress, people will tend to work and perform harder. It acts as a pushing force for them. However, it is very important to give a right amount of stress, or else the chances of it backfired is very high. When one is given too much of stress, other than their performance will deteriorate, he or she probably have a high possibility of having a breakdown. It is been proved that in the recent years, there are more and more cases of school children committing suicide. Moreover, there is also an increase in the number of students seeking help from psychiatrists.
A child who might be fine on weekends but who develops stomach aches, headaches and other ailments on Monday mornings might be afraid about going to school might be a type of distress signals. When one is over-stressed, one’s immune system will tends to deteriorate. Illnesses will occur more frequently. Psychological changes are also part of the symptoms of being over-stressed such as anger, frustration or defiance. Parents are encouraged to observe their children through signs so that it will not be too late for them to ‘save’ their children. If your child appears miserable, unhappy, tearful or depressed, and shows little enjoyment in things, then, your child might be over-stressed.
It is important for parents to recognize the symptoms and work on it. Teaching your child to organize his time, balance his play, rest and work time can be one of the ways to reduce stress. Health should not be neglected too; adequate nourishment for your child will help greatly in reducing stress too. However, if your child’s symptoms persist for a period, it is strongly encouraged to bring your child to a psychiatrist. It is never too late to seek help.
In conclusion, the importance of giving the right amount of stress should be understood by everyone. Whether you are still studying or working, one should not give yourself too much of stress. Afterall, learning is a life-long process; it should by enjoy, not stressful.
