Singapore General Election 2006

Singaporeans will go to the polls on the 6th of May for this upcoming General Election. Unlike from the election held on 2001, this year's election will be more competitive than the past elections, with political parties such as Democratic Progressive Party, People's Action Party, National Solidarity Party, Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Singapura, Singapore Justice Party, Singapore People's Party, Singapore Democratic Party, and Workers' Party. Moreover, this election results would also clearly reflect if Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has emerged as a strongly endorsed national leader.

The People's Action Party (PAP) has been governing Singapore since 1959. There is no doubt that PAP helped Singapore to improve its economy and achieve high standard of living. They have shown themselves capable of serving Singapore. Most of the Singaporeans also gave their trust to the PAP during the election held 5 years back. Opposition parties are not getting much support from the Singaporeans for the reason that many thought was that, they did not carry out practical actions from the issues they raised during the campaigns. On the other hand, PAP took more actions to prove to their supporters that they are capable of implementing issues that they raised.

If I were given a vote, I would vote for the People’s Action Party, for the reason that they have more experience in governing Singapore. PAP have proven their capability of governing Singapore in these past years. Also, I’m not sure whether the opposition parties would be able to govern Singapore and bring Singapore to greater heights. However, the presence of opposition parties does make a difference in Singapore politics. With competitions, political parties will not slack.

In conclusion, this election is an important event for everyone in Singapore. During this period of time, voters must look objective at what the candidates offered them in their constituency, make their own decision and vote without fear or favour.
